NBC12 News reports that a tractor trailer accident on southbound I-95 at mile marker 77.8 near Lombardy in the City of Richmond is poised to cause substantial traffic delays as crews work to clear roadways.

Data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that more than 100,000 people were injured in traffic accidents involving commercial trucks in the United States in 2012. Of this number, nearly 4,000 people were killed. In total, approximately 333,000 accidents occurred on U.S. roads that involved a large truck.

While the cause of the accident in this case has yet to be determined, a study by the Federal Motor Carrier Administration revealed the following leading factors shown to be causes of truck accidents in the U.S. including:

  1. Illegal drug use
  2. Speeding
  3. Over-the-counter medication use
  4. Driver fatigue
  5. Distracted driving

September 18, 2015

The right lane of Interstate 64 east was closed this morning after a loose dog near mile marker 198 resulted in a major crash.

According to CBS 6 News, the driver of a 2012 International box truck was forced to quickly reduce speed to avoid hitting dogs in the roadway, causing a rear-end collision with a 2013 Peterbilt tanker.

Neither driver was injured, although approximately 50 feet of guard rail sustained significant damage.

In Virginia, the law requires that dog owners to use “reasonable care” in restraining and controlling their dogs. This means that injured parties may be able to recover damages if their injuries resulted from the owner’s failure to use reasonable care to restrain or handle the dog. Continue reading

August 31, 2015- Henrico, VA

All lanes of I-295 near the I-95 split in northern Henrico were closed after the trailer on a commercial vehicle broke free, hit a guardrail and then an SUV. The out-of-control trailer eventually overturned in a ditch, spilling its payload of sand and leaking diesel fuel.  No one was hurt in the crash, but the lane closures backed-up morning commuter traffic for more than four miles.

According to CBS 6 News, the motor carrier unit of the State Police Department, a specialized investigatory team, is currently looking into whether or not equipment failure was to blame.

A study conducted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration revealed that in 2013, 3,906 large trucks were involved in fatal crashes, 73,000 were involved in injury crashes, and 265,000 were involved in property damage only crashes. Continue reading
