CBS 6 News reports that after a three vehicle collision on the Powhite Parkway Wednesday night, one person was transported to the hospital. The crash occurred near the Route 288 ramp in Chesterfield County. Airbags were deployed in each of the three vehicles involved in the crash. Luckily, only one person was seriously injured in this wreck. By 11:52 p.m., all lanes on the Powhite Parkway had reopened.

Frontal airbags are designed to deploy in moderate to severe frontal crashes, which are defined as crashes that are comparable to hitting a solid, fixed barrier at 8 to 14 mph or higher. This would be equivalent to striking a parked car at about 16 to 28 mph or higher. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 18,319 people are alive today because of their airbags.
